"Kibbutz Degania" 1960/5720

The Second coin in the Hanukka Commemorative series


Issued by the Bank of Israel to commemorate the Hanukka Festival and the 50th Anniversary of Degania.

Anti-semitism in Eastern Europe generated a wave of Immigration to the Holyland. Most were young inspired by socialist ideals spawning the rural settlement co-operative. The first "national farm" Kibbutz Degania was established in 1909. These were the pioneers that moved the Jewish community on its course toward an independent state.


Description of the Coin

Front

Trees and Houses of Degania with the Sea of Galilee in the background. The inscription, "Jubilee of Collective Settlement" and "Degania" in Hebrew. The Proof coin is struck with a small Hebrew 'mem' between the 2 Cypress trees.

Reverse

The denomination "1 Israeli Lira," in Hebrew. The date "5720-1960" in Hebrew and English and "Israel" in Hebrew and Arabic.

Uncirculated: A Mint State coin struck on a standard quality planchet. The coin displays a matte type appearance.


Proof: A coin which was made with special care. The coins are struck with extra pressure using polished dies. The planchets are specially selected and polished. The coins exhibit a smooth and neater surface in the fields and a frosted appearance on the raised points of the coin. A higher quality strike. A small Hebrew 'mem' mintmark at the lower right struck on the "Degania" coin.
