New Rochelle Half Dollar
State of New York Commemorative issue The New Rochelle, New York Half Dollar 250th Anniversary 1838 - 1938
In 1688 a small group of Huguenot refugees from la Rochelle, France, purchased a tract of 6,000 acres of land from Lord John Pell. The contract provided that a 'fattened calf' be delivered every year on June 20th. The community of New Rochelle grew and in the year 1899 incorporated as a City.
Coin Description Front: Lord John Pell with a 'fattened calf', in the center. Around the rim, "Settled 1688 - Incorporated 1899 - New Rochelle, New York." Reverse: In the center, the seal of the City of New Rochelle with the text "E. Pluribus Unum - Liberty - In God We Trust" and the date of issue "1938". Around the rim, "United States of America - Half Dollar".
